Expression Through Style
Fashion and style are two completely different things, fashion is a trend that a group of people follow and style is something the wearer of the fashion. Everybody determines their own personal style through the decision of what clothes and accessories to put together. Fashion sense is something to experiment with as it is a way to express your personal style and individuality. For example, a person from a creative background may project this with crazy patterns and vibrant colours and convey a unique style. We are able to communicate our personality to the outside world without speaking which can be done in several ways, whether it is by colours, slogans or the style of clothing.
Colours play a key part in our fashion choices as they form connotations which can be linked to our particular mood. For example wearing the colour yellow could signify you are feeling energetic and happy whilst wearing aqua blue could show you are in a chilled, relaxed mood. When choosing clothing to wear each day, you will perhaps pick the colour of your garments subconsciously but this is likely to be linked to your mood.
Slogans and words printed on our clothing can also signify our feelings, thoughts and details about our life. Some may promote universities and companies which gives people an insight to your life. Modern day slogan t-shirts tend to opt for humorous quotes and sayings which can be offensive therefore these are often restricted for casual wear only and are worn by younger men.
The design of the initial garments that we choose to wear can tell people about a lot about us. Take American high school stereotypes for example, men wearing sportswear such as trainers, shorts and sweatbands indicate they are sporty and athletic whereas a person wearing baggy jeans and a t-shirt carrying a skateboard can be categorised as a skater. Stereotypes can be linked closely with fashion due to a persons fashion choice; this can make it difficult to distinguish yourself from a crowd.
Stereotypes are often created by a link of familiar interests which can make it tough to find your own, unique, sense of style. Slogans are a great way to express your feelings and thoughts without being too forward. More people than ever are trying to branch out and mix trends to form their own fashions in order to express their self through their individual style. An example of this can be seen on these t-shirts from Xplicit. Having a slogan on your clothing will allow you to make a statement without actually saying the words yourself.
